In hazardous areas where flammable liquids, vapors, gases or combustible dusts could cause a fire or an explosion, such as oil & gas refineries, chemical processing plants, printing industries, and sewerage plants, explosion proof equipment is regarded as indispensable apparatus which reduce the potential hazard from happening. To control the quality of products and the safety of personnel in these work places, every country establishes its conformity assessment procedure and issues certificates to endorse the performance of the equipment.

The inspection items for explosion proof equipment are similar but certificates vary from country to country, for example, CNEX from China, UL from North America, and Gost-R Ex-proof from Russian Federation. Thus, when a company is planning to develop new markets, having a certificate approved by the target countries is one of the key point for the marketing team. Fortunately, with two most internationally recognized certificates, ATEX and IECEx, manufacturers and decision makers from all around the world share same standards which benefit the international trade.

What is the difference among ATEX, IECEx and CNEX?

ATEX is the abbreviation of the french term “ATmosphère EXplosibles” which means explosive atmospheres, and is derived from the directive 2014/34/EU of European Union. Its conformity assessment procedures include two parts, directive 94/9/EC for manufacturer, and 99/92/EC for users and equipment. Therefore, ATEX is considered as a mandatory regulation for European Industry. It ensures the free movement of explosion proof products throughout the European Unions.

IECEx (International Electrotechnical Commission Explosive) is an international certification with the endorsement of United Nations. Its goal is to reduce the testing cost and time in the product assessment process for manufacturer. Thanks to the thorough inspection, IECEx also helps to build confidence in the safety of explosion proof equipment from manufacture, operation, maintenance to installation.

CNEX is a certificate from China, conducted by Nanyang Explosion Protected Electrical Apparatus Research Institute (CQST) aiming for the research, development and test of explosion proof electrical products. Besides, with recognized experts in explosion safety equipment field, the CQST also provides the service to apply for ATEX and IECEx certificates.

Actually, except for the institutions and the countries where recognize and accept the certificates are different, there is no much difference between ATEX, IECEx and CNEX. Their main purpose is providing a criterion for users to identify the safety of the equipment.
