Cameras count on electricity to power on; however, do cameras need extra power while using housing and other CCTV accessories? Actually, it depends on the project requirements.

How to choose the correct power supply for your housing, please look up the below suggestions and the LonTrend numbering rules.

The following table shows available input power supply for LonTrend camera housing.

ModelInput Power
-0
-1 12 V DC
-2 24 V AC
-3 110 V AC
-4 220 V AC
-5 PoE (for PoE/non PoE camera)
-6 24 V DC
-9 PoE (for PoE camera only)

Situation 1:
Timing of selecting empty housing

When additional components (heater, blower and IR illuminator) are not needed in the housing and the power from the installation site is the same as the power required by the camera, an empty housing (-0) is enough to use because the input cable which goes through the cable gland of the housing can be directly inserted to the camera and provide power.

Situation 2:
Timing of using housing with input power option

While you are choosing an enclosure with heater, blower, wiper or IR illuminator, it is necessary to add a power control board corresponding to the power voltage from exterior because these components rely on the power coming from the housing. For example, if the external power is 220 V AC, and the camera uses the same power voltage, you must choose our housing with -4 (220 V AC). Thus, the cable from exterior can provide power to the camera and accessories simultaneously.

Situation 3:
Timing of using power adaptor

If the power voltage required by your camera is different from that comes from your installation site, you may purchase an additional power adaptor to fix in your housing. For instance, when the outside power is 220 V AC but your camera only consumes 12 V DC, there are two available ways. The best practice is choosing the power option corresponding to your camera (-1, 12 V DC). Generally, the voltage needed by cameras is lower than the one provided from exterior so using the camera enclosures with lower voltage causes less danger to installers when a short circuit happens. However, if there is another consideration for installation, customers can use the camera housing which supports the external power voltage (-4, 220 V AC) as well.

Solution of PoE power supply from installation site

There are more and more IP or network cameras replacing analog cameras in the video surveillance market. Some IP cameras consume DC power and some support PoE (Power over Ethernet) power supply.

If your external power is PoE and your IP camera accepts PoE power supply, as the input power is equal to the output power, your choice goes back to situation 1 (-0, no accessory is required).

However, on the same installation site where uses PoE power supply, if your camera only consumes non PoE power, it is necessary to choose our camera enclosure with -5 power option. We also need -5 model when accessories are needed for the projects. Kindly reminding that LonTrend adopts 60 W Hi PoE module, to ensure the safety and efficiency of usage, we need to check that the total power consumption of your camera and additional components inside the housing is inferior to 60 W.

With the ever-changing technology, there are more and more innovations popping up and making the installation of cameras convenient and diverse. If you have any special application and need tailor-made solution, such as housing for wireless camera powered by battery or solar panel, please contact our sales to have further project support.
